Start Collecting on NBA Top Shot — Wallet, Packs, Market

NBA Top Shot sells officially licensed NBA “Moments” — video highlight NFTs — run by Dapper Labs on the Flow blockchain. Signup and payment need no crypto knowledge — social login and credit cards are supported. This guide covers the mechanics as of September 2026 from Top Shot’s own support docs. For the platform’s standing record see its registry profile.

Sign-up: your Dapper Wallet is created automatically#

Signing up at nbatopshot.com creates two things at once: a Top Shot account and a Dapper Wallet — the custodial wallet that holds your Moments, payment methods and sale proceeds. You don’t set up a separate crypto wallet; Dapper is built in.

Account creation takes either social login (Google or Apple ID) or email + password with email verification. If you already have a Dapper account from another Dapper product, log in with that — don’t create a second.

One gate before that: Top Shot’s Terms of Use (last updated May 2025) require users over 18 and of the age of majority in their jurisdiction — and limit accounts to residents located in an “Approved Region” (Canada, the US, or any place not on the terms’ Exhibit A restricted list where the app is offered; Australia is not in Exhibit A). Sanctions and denied-parties exclusions apply on top (checked Sep 2026).

The trade-off is baked into that convenience: Top Shot is platform-custody. Dapper holds your Moments; you don’t control private keys — the custody model where your collectibles are only as portable as the platform’s withdrawal options allow. Check Dapper’s current withdrawal options before building a large collection.

Two ways to get Moments#

Packs. New Moments enter circulation through pack drops — fixed-price bundles with unknown contents, like ripping a physical pack. Drops run on a queue: join the queue when the drop opens, get assigned a spot, buy if your number comes up. New accounts get a shot at a Starter Pack. Miss the queue and “Rebound” packs sometimes follow. Each drop’s contents and odds are published on the pack page before it opens — read them; that’s the disclosure you’re buying under, not a return figure.

The Marketplace. Moments also trade peer-to-peer on the marketplace — resale listings owned by other collectors, open 24/7, searchable by player, team, play type, set and serial number. You can buy with credit card or crypto, and sales settle as Dapper Balance — credit inside your Dapper Wallet you can spend again or (where supported) withdraw. On the marketplace you buy a specific listed Moment at a listed price; a pack’s contents are unknown until you open it.

What a Moment actually is#

A Moment is a licensed NBA highlight — serial-numbered within a set and tier. Serial number and set/tier are the mechanics that differentiate one copy from another of the same highlight. Top Shot’s Top Shot Score — a score derived from your collection — gates access to some pack drops.

One notable infrastructure change: Moment media is now pinned to IPFS and independently verifiable (announced June 2026).

The pre-buy checklist for Top Shot specifically#

  • [ ] Custody accepted — Dapper custodial wallet; know the current withdrawal options before sizing a collection
  • [ ] Eligibility confirmed — Top Shot’s Terms require users over 18 and of the age of majority in their jurisdiction, resident in an Approved Region (Australia isn’t on its Exhibit A restricted list); sanctions-list exclusions apply
  • [ ] Pack vs marketplace understood — packs reveal contents after purchase; the marketplace lists specific Moments and prices
  • [ ] Serial/tier understood — serial number and set/tier determine which copy of a highlight you’re buying
  • [ ] Seller fee and Dapper Balance mechanics read on the current fee page
  • [ ] Target checked — know which Moment or drop you’re buying, and at what listed price or published pack odds

Bottom line: Top Shot’s start needs nothing crypto-shaped — social login, a credit card, no wallet — and it offers no self-custody option: Dapper holds custody for you. Know the pack-versus-marketplace mechanics — unknown contents versus listed prices — and that you’re trusting Dapper’s custody, then re-check the registry record plus the general platform evaluation checklist before spending real money.
